Tinxa Finance® is wholly owned by Modoc Tribe Financial Services Authority. Modoc Tribe Financial Services Authority is a governmental agency and arm of the Modoc Nation, a federally recognized Indian Tribe.
The Modoc Nation is a federally recognized Indian Tribe organized under the Oklahoma Indian Welfare Act of 1936 with a constitution and bylaws approved by the United States Secretary of the Interior on July 27, 1990.
The story of the Modoc Nation
The story of the Modoc Nation begins with their ancestral home in what is now northeastern California and southern Oregon. With the arrival of traders, prospectors, and farmers it put enormous pressure on the Modocs to sign a reservation treaty in 1864. Life on the reservation was less than ideal and in 1865, Captain Jack (Kientpoos) led his band of Modocs off the reservation and returned to the Lost River area and requested a separate reservation exclusively for the Modocs. This action angered the U.S. Army which began the Modoc War. Captain Jack’s band retreated to the nearly inhospitable Lava Beds and with no more than 60 men held off over 1,000 U.S. Army soldiers for nearly six months. After the war, 155 Modoc men, women, and children were loaded into boxcars, some shackled, and made a 2,000-mile winter trip to the Quapaw Agency in the northeastern corner of Oklahoma. The following years were miserably tough but in spite of the odds, the Modocs persevered, survived, and were granted federal recognition in 1978.
